file extensions

Using WinXP, you could go to File Types tab and modify them manually.
The tab is missing in Vista.

Problem:
In XP, I had my sound recorder associated with my .wav files.
I modified the properties of the file extension so it would open, play the
sound, the close.

In Vista, I can't seem to be able to edit the Open or the Play aspect.

How can I do this in Vista.

Please don't ask me why...we all have our own personal reasons for doing
what we do...I just want to be able to do it in Vista...if it's possible.

Hi Tracy,

Yep, it's missing. To modify file extensions such as you are suggesting
requires registry editing. There is a dialog in the Control Panel/Default
Programs to change the association, but direct editing for modification is
not possible.

I would suggest examining your XP system's HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT entry for that
file type and modify the Vista key similarly.

Change the program that opens a type of file

If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software
program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file
use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell
Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you
choose.

Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.

Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the
type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click
Choose Default Program.

Click the program that you want to use to open this file.

Do one of the following:

If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program,
select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check
box, and then click OK.

If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time,
clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check
box, and then click OK.

The F1 (Help) key located that...

of the app you are using to play the sound. It sounds to me like you expect
the default .wav player in Vista to have a /close switch, and it does not.
You would need to kill the Media Player task.
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WMP11.AssocFile.WAV\shell\play\c ommand
There are other players, but not included in Vista. SndRec32.exe from XP
will play in Vista, and has the /play /close syntax you want.

No, I don't expect the default to open, play and close. That's what I'm try
to FORCE. I do know about the registry (I'm in there all the time)
In Vista, can I only use regedit to make my modifications manually?
