File Management In Vista: Grrrrrrrr

While there are some nice features in the new Windows Explorer, am I the only
one who thinks the new file management system in Vista has essentially lost
50 IQ points over the traditional system in 98/ME/XP? What was MS thinking?

What really fries me is that MS went out of its way to NOT have those easy
up/move/copy/delete icons in the menu bar. About 2/3 of the time I try to
manage files something goes wrong. I can't grab more than one because some
file type icon appear and gets dragged around... or I try to copy but there's
only a move option... or sometimes it’s copy when I really want move. Luck of
the draw. At other times, just as I'm ready to move a file... the target
directory expands and the file lands up in the wrong place. Today I was
trying to move some 5000 recovered email files from a backup drive to my C
drive and I was not given an option to MOVE... only copy. 15 SECONDS later I
get another popup asking me if I want to move or copy. By then I'm not even
sure whether a casual cursor rollover changed the target folder. This is
insane.

Someone gave me a method to add move/copy to the context menu but I'm not
sure if it applies to Vista 32 yet. Is there ANY way to make this file
management system work as simply as the older Windows system did? Because if
not, I'm about ready to go back to XP before I go insane.

Press the Alt key and a menu bar will appear that has all you want under
Edit. This menu can be made permenant if you like.

Also see the link below, this will add to the context menu and it works fine
in Vista 32bit Home premium.

Vista File Management, IMO, has gained IQ points.

Sometimes breaking from tradition is hard, but such is the price of
progress.

All the command you want are under the "Organize" dropdown in all
Explorer windows.

As for the move/copy program, the thing to remember is that if you drag
files -between folders on the same drive-, then Windows Explorer will
move them. If you drag 'n drop betwen folders on different drives, then
they will be copied.

One way to be sure is to use "Cut 'n Paste" on the Organize dropdown.
CUTting files and then pasting them will move, while COPYing and
PASTEing with copy files.

If you prefer Drag 'n Drop, then if you use the right mouse button for
the drag, you'll get a context menu when you release the mouse button
that contains "Copy Here" and "Move Here", in addition to a "Cancel"
command and whatever shell extension you have installed.

If you're talking about the "Copy To Folder" and "Move To Folder" menu
options, then I believe Brink has a tutorial on this very NG on how to
enable them. The Move/Copy options in a right-drag context menu have
been around as defaults since the days of Windows 95. If they are not,
then there is something seriously wrong with your installation.

OK... I gave examples of why this old time Windows user finds Vista's file
management system somewhere between idiotic and infuriating. You've not given
any examples how making what were once simple OS tasks more difficult is
"progress". Just because something is new doesn't make it better.

But it can't be better unless it is new.

YES I have mentioned all the things you say in numerous posts over the last
14 months (even before vista was RTM). Of course you should go back to XP,
all inteligent users do exactly that. Some people are stuck with vista and
cant do anything, and the total idiot dorks remain with vista and think its
great.

you CAN add copy and move to the right click (context menu)
there are some add on toolbars around that give some funtionality back,
but you can also use some other file manager (some are free, some are
shareware).

a good replacement is this http://www.xyplorer.com/ shareware
ir this http://www.zabkat.com/ shareware also

FREE ones see here:

If you wanted things to be the same as they were in an older version of the
OS you should be running the older version.

If you're talking about dragging an icon to a folder, it's very simple.
If the default option is not one you like, say Move, then hold CTRL and it
becomes copy instead of move. Hold down ALT and all you'll do is send a
shortcut to the destination folder.
If the default option is Copy, then hold down SHIFT and the option becomes
move.

That procedure has been part of Windows almost from the start.

Why? If Windows has kept these simple file options the same at least since
98 to ME to XP why shouldn't we expect them to keep them in Vista? You're
making an argument that users who are trapped in a proprietary OS and PAY to
keep current or just buy a new PC should expect to have their knowledge of it
made obsolete based on MS's whim.

The bottom line is it would NOT have been that difficult for MS to include
these old familiar file management icons. They went OUT OF THEIR WAY to
remove a user option.
