File migration utility question

Hi,

Currently my organisation is migration from Netware to Windows
AD/Exchange/F&P. The AD and Exchange part has already been completed and now
we are in the process of migrating the Netware file servers to windows 2003
file servers.

We are using the FMU to stamp the permissions from netware to windows.
Anyway, we have abt 100++ netware volumes to migrate and we do the migration
volume by volume. Some volumes are large while some are relatively small.
The largest volume that we have is abt 60+GB in size.

One problem that we are facing is that the time for the permission stamping
is inconsistent. E.g. a 40GB volume took abt 16hrs to stamp, while another
14GB volume took only 15mins.

Here is the actual situation:

We have 3 sites A, B and C. MSDSS and FMU runs in Site C. Netware and
windows file servers are in Sites A and B. So typically, FMU will run from
Site C, read permissions from a netware server in SiteA and then stamp
permissions to windows file server in SiteA.

So, what i would like to find out is, based on the above scenario, what
would be the likely factors causing inconsistent stamping time? At first we
think it may be because of the large volume size, but then again, we hv
achieved a 1GB/min stamping rate. So could it be the number of files in the
volume, or could it be because the stamping is across the WAN?

If its due to the WAN, is it possible if we install another MSDSS server in
the environment (the current MSDSS is used for password sync between NDS and
AD) solely to run FMU? Or is it possible to run FMU separate from MSDSS,
such that we can have an FMU console at each site?

Appreciate any advice. Currently, the file server migration is taking a
long time to complete...

Thanx.

Hello,

Thanks for your posting here.

I think the WAN connection is the most possible cause.

When you use the File Migration Utility (FMU) to migrate the desired
directory structure from NetWare to NTFS, you can import the migration log
that was created when you migrate NDS accounts. You can use the View Maps
option to show the mappings between the NetWare account and the AD account.

Go through with the migration and the files and folders should be migrated
over and the users given the permissions according to how Windows 2003 maps
to Novell permissions.

Wish it helps!
