On a fairly new Toshiba laptop, the wireless printer stopped working -
a call to tech support suggested uninstalling the printer, then
reinstall. 10 minutes later appearing stalled it was rebooted. The
adminstrator account now will not accept password though another user
can login - most of the desktop is gone - and some very precious files
under the admin account are desired. Toshiba states they are not
responsible for backing up systems and only refer to a third party data
recovery outfit and state the O/S is damaged and need to use the
recovery disk which will wipe clean all the data. The system boots up
linux and there are only a few files apparent - BOOT.SDI ~ 3170304 Kb
blocks and BOOT.WIM 109229747 Kb blocks - I believe Vista is broke, but
the desired data files still present - is there any method known to
extract them from the encrypted BOOT.* files or possibly get the
administrator account active enough to copy off the desired files?

Please help!!! Thank you!

Hi MGT,

Welcome to Vista Forums. arty:

This will show you how to reset the password for the Administrator
account. I would try Method Two. If nothing else, you should be able to
copy the files from within the built-in Administrator account.

Thanks Shawn!

Turns out I was able to "boot in safe mode with prompt" using the old
password - it only isn't accepted when attempting to login as a user -
once in as the user in safe mode though in the USER directory there are
directories for public and the other user account, but the user with
admin privalages doesn't appear to have a directory - would that mean
all those files are gone? Or does an admin user have their files stored
elsewhere? Also did a "find" search for both the user name and also
the file_extension - no result - do seem to find some weird files
date/time stamped the day of the files_gone_missing with
{a_bunch_of_numbers/letters} surrounded by the "{}" - could somehow they
all be in there - any ideas to recover them?

MGT,

If it is not listed in "C:\Users\(your username)", then they are gone.
You might try a System Restore using a restore point date before this
happened to try and restore them though.

Thank you!

Did the System Restore - desktop came back - as did the USERS\user_name
directory with the missing folders, though they are empty - is there any
particular method to recover the contents of the directories?
