File Sharing Dies

Hi everyone,

I've scanned through all the comments on file sharing issues and just about
all of them focus on the fact that file sharing doesnt work at all.

I, however, have two Vista machines that share just fine...for a while.

I have a Vista Home Premium running Media Center in my living room where all
my audio/video files are stored. I have shared out a 'Music' share and a
'Video' share. My desktop (also running Vista) can connect to the share
drives on the media center machine, but once I use the share for a period of
time (somewhere between 20-30 minutes) it just stops responding. I lose
access to the share and cannot restablish. I can still ping the machine, both
by machine name and ip, and I can connect to the machine via remote desktop.
But shares stop responding with a '<share> is not accessible' message.
Rebooting the media center pc fixes the problem, but 20 minutes later it
stops working again.

Both machines are patched up to date, run Symantec Anti Virus only (no
firewall or security stuff), Windows firewall and defender are switched off
on both machines, both are on same workgroup name, and both have the same
network protocols running, and IPv6 is disabled on both machines.

Any ideas on how to keep sharing from dying would be much appreciated!

Is there a router involved here?

Yes Mick, thanks, I had already found this link before I posted. I had gone
through this once, its how I set up the sharing in the first place.

What kills me is that it works for 20-30 minutes then stops til the reboot.

Ill run through this again and see if I missed something.

Yes, there is a router involved, but both machines are on the same side of
the router connected via an unmanaged switch. My network runs like this:

Cable Modem -> Router -> Switch

Both computers in question are plugged into the switch. Its designed this
way because my switch is gigabit, while the router is not. This way
everything in my house running through the switch (and cat6) is gigabit speed.
