Depends on your upload speed to the internet which is generally a lot less
than your download speed.

Greetings,

If you're unable to make a direct connection with your contacts, it will simply send the file
through the Messenger server, which is a rather slow process [by design].

Define direct connection.

2 PCs directly connected to the internet with a dsl modem and only windows
firewall.
Slow as molasses. Foldershare the product MS bought workes faster and
better.
What do I have to do to make it go faster? Attach a underwater cable between
the 2?

Seems that they took foldershare technology and destroyed it.

Hi,

Firstly, Messenger's sharing feature was designed and implemented before FolderShare was
bought -- it has nothing to do with FolderShare.

Secondly, direct connection means I can establish a connection to your computer or
vice-versa.

How does shared folder works? Does it not need a direct connection to go
fast?

Seems that they stole the techology first, then bought out foldershare so
they wont have problems... ;-)

Hi,

Although Shared Folders use something called Delta Sync which determines changes in the files
and transmits the changes only, as well as has its own compression, the actual transmission
layer is same as Messenger has always used -- tries a direct connection and failing that,
sends the data through the server. If it's the latter, it will go slow.
