2.6MB/s seems quite slow for ANY connection, even a dialup.
I'd look into that unless you're downloading torrents!
(AND it's "whether" and "right" instead of "write"!)

2.6 MBytes/sec = 20 MBits/second. 802.11G standard mode is 54 mBits/sec. -
overhead (TCP/IP and RF link maintenance) and 20 mBits/sec sounds about
right, as the fastest you would ever get is around 30-ish mBits/sec.

Your welcome. Note though that I mentioned 802.11G standard mode....most
mfg's have their propietary 'Turbo' mode, and I was unsure what you were
using....maybe even 'N'.

The best newsgroup for wireless questions is: alt.internet.wireless

Wireless is usually great for internet stuff, as the bottleneck would be
the internet connection....jsut about any good 'G' connection will be
faster than internet access, but local LAN stuff....as you see....will be
severely limited in speed.

My wired LAN is 100mbps, and transfering files from PC to PC are usually
reported by DUMeter at about 80 mbps....out of 100 mbps. (80 mbps is
including overhead, both TCP/IP and Eth. overhead)

By the way GMorris was completely correct about using torrents over
wireless. 1 torrent user can easily kill an entire wireless AP.

if i download torrents then i am carefull to set things so i don't choke my
speed .All i am refering to is transfering files using copy/paste/move ect
to external drives router is a belkin n1 vision my wirless adapter is
802.11b/g i am aware that that i won't get 'N' speeds with this adapter but
i plan to upgrade my laptop later in the year so i will get one with a
faster adapter to fully utilise the routers capabilities

thanks for your advice

Some commonly used routers, whether they are wireless or wired, cannot
handle torrent traffic for one reason or another. The sheer number of
connections opened is probably the commonest cause. One to 4 simultaneous
torrents may be the limit for stable router operation, depending on the
number of connections each torrent opens. The Azureus Wiki lists a few of
the known problematic routers;

http://azureuswiki.com/index.php/Bad_routers

See also: http://www.roumazeilles.net/news/nw/news0068.php

What seems like network congestion may actually be a continuous string of
disconnections from the ISP, router reboots or even lockups and crashes. DOS
or DDOS attacks on P2P IPs can also be a problem.

On the other hand BitTorrent-ing seems to be entering the router mainstream:

which has nothing to do with torrents
i am happy thanks to "dans" that given the specs of my laptop i am
transfering at ok speeds
once again thanks for reading and responding
