File transfers in Windows Live Messenger a problem

Hi
I am running Windows Live Messenger 8.5.1302.1018. Every time I try to
transfer a file to someone they do not get the invitation and I have to log
out and come back in again before the invitation shows on their screen. That
also happens in reverse when someone is trying to send me a file. Any ideas
or suggestions to rectify this problem would be most welcome. Many thanks

Greetings Mallane,

Do you happen to have a residential router or some other NAT device on your network that
supports Universal Plug and Play (UPnP)? If so, as a starting point, shut down Messenger,
then delete all MSNMSGR entries in the UPnP port forwarding table in the router. The easiest
way do this is to go to Start, Network in Vista or Start, Run, "ncpa.cpl", click OK in XP.
Then right-click an Internet gateway or something else corresponding to your router, choose
Properties, then Settings button, and delete the entries there. Then restart Messenger.

If this is the case and you still can't find out how to edit port forwarding table, simply
resetting the router might be good enough (unplug, plug back in). Additionally, 8.5 of
Messenger has some issues with some routers with this and upgrading to the latest 2009 beta
has corrected them. You can find that beta release at the following link:
http://download.live.com/messenger

Note that if the router isn't the issue here, you might try the beta release anyway as
there's been a number of networking fixes.

Thanks for your reply. I do not have a router! I am uncertain whether the
other part does have one and will raise that issue with them. Would the fact
that they might have a router cause me problems when I am trying to send them
a file? I do not appear to have the same problems with others users. I will
canvas that with them anyway and might try beta as you suggest although given
that I am tech hopeless I usually steer well clear of beta releases,

Hello Jonathan

An update on the problems I am experiencing and a response to your
suggestions. Neither party uses a router so that is not the problem. Having
also seen a couple of negative comments regarding the Windows Beta version I
am loathe to try it at this stage. Guess I will just have to persevere in
getting around the problem by logging out and back in but would really love
to know whether others experience a similar problem and what they have done
to rectify it. Any other suggestions you may have Jonathan would be most
welcome and also any comments from other users also. Many thanks

I am confused - I received an email saying there had been a response to my
question and when I log in here it is from 'documents' and says nothing! Any
explanation please?
