File versions.

I have just noticed that my virus scanner tells me that some files have
'changed' (but are not virused) and looking back in the scan logs the changes
coincide with updates.

the files that have changed are ...
kernel32.dll
user32.dll
shell32.dll
ntoskrnl.exe

What I'd like to know is ...
Is there somewhere that has the file versions & sizes so I can double check I've
got what I should have and if they aren't right, where can I get the right ones?

Windows version? Is the machine up-to-date at Windows Update? What
versions of those files do you have currently?

According to system properties I have WinXP Pro V2002 SP1
Updates are up-to-date 'except' for SP2 due to the fact that I have 2 digital
cameras & a scanner that refuse to work with SP2.

Anyway, seeing I had and effective list of the changes & the updates that
caused them I went & looked for the info on each update in the 'IT
professionals' section. A full list of files/versions/sizes/dates is included
for each update.

With a bit of searching, toing and froing I finally confirmed that all files are
as they should be.

Know that in the very near future you will need to have SP2 installed to get
any further security updates, Stan.

Hmmm, that's interesting ... have there been any more updates since MS06-002
(908519)? It's been rather quiet since then.

I might just have to live in fear because there is no fix for the scanner or one
of the cameras (the better/new one of corse).

Windows Updates are usually released in a batch on the 2nd Tuesday of each
month (e.g., 14 Feb-06). MS06-002 was released on the 2nd Tuesday of
January.

Make sure Automatic Updates is enabled and configured properly so you don't
miss any.

I'd be very surprised if the scanner's and camera's manufacturers haven't
made SP2-specific updates available, Stan.

Been down the path of searching for updates.....

Scanner - no longer supported!
Older camera - updates available.
New camera - no update available (yet, as this camera is 1 month old I'm
surprised it doesn't already support SP2).
