I have just upgraded an XP box with SP2 from a CD.

When I went to look for further updates I get the two options of Express
and custom and when either is clicked it goes off searching, but quickly
returns with the message:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

If I take the "Register" option it quickly come up with download 100%
and then seems to work it way through registering them. I am returned to
the "custom or Express" option window.

When I again start the scan it again comes up with the " ... nolonger
registered" message.

I tried downloaded the updater S/W and installing it, but it may no
difference.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks............

I have had the same problem for some time. Nothing has fixed it. I took a
look at my update file and found error: 0x80040154. I haven't found a
solution for that error (that has worked).

Why don't you START>RUN> type in OPEN box: %windir%\WindowsUpdate.log.

Then scroll to right side, and see if you have an error message that shows
up consistently.

Hi there.
This might help.Open a cmd prompt and type each line and hit Enter key after
each.

net.exe stop wuauserv
regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
regsvr32 /s wups.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
regsvr32 /s jscript.dll
regsvr32 /s atl.dll
regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
regsvr32 /s msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Works for me

Hi,

I tried your solution and I still get the following mesage:

" Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem "

I'll keep trying.
