Files no longer registered or installed to update????

Please help. I have no idea when this happen and I searched high and low for
an answer with no luck. I am assuming it happened when I updated to IE 7 and
with all the issues went back to IE 6. I tried the recommended option but it
still wont work. It acts like it's downloading the files but this orginal
error msg comes up.

Hubby is a programmer but to be honest with you I think he is the cause of
all this and I dont want him screwing up my puter anymore than he has. ;-)

Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

I fix a lot of programmers computers at work, so I sympathize.
Since you don't indicate at what point you receive this error message lets
try the following:
1. If you are able to get to the screen in MS update that offers the Express
or Custom options, look over in the left hand frame and click "change
settings, then scroll all the way down to the bottom and follow the prompts
to stop using Microsoft Update.

2. After this or if you were unable to get to the Express/Custom screen in
the first place try this windows update link here:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu....aspx?ln=en-us
If you see the offer to "Get Microsoft Update Today" click on this and
follow the prompts to install/repair your MS update capability.

3. If you see the same error when you tried this link we got bigger system
problems, maybe an internet explorer file issue.

For repair or reinstall of Internet Explorer 6 on XP SP2, KB318378
recommends reinstalling service pack 2, the IT professionals version can be
downloaded here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Ignore the article message about "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING
JUST ONE COMPUTER", if SP2 is already installed this is the best way to
perform a repair/reinstall.

If this too is unsuccessful post back as you may have an even bigger issue
going on.

Thank you Charlie

I tried the first 2 suggestions but still was getting the same error message
so I guess I have "bigger system issues." I am trying the 3rd suggestion
right now and it's downloading so I'm crossing my mouses and hope it works
but not counting my windows. lol
I will let you know if it works or not. Thank you for the help so far

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

I am having the same problem.. I have tryed your way as well.. the system
cant start nor stop any net services.. there is something VERY wrong here
but not sure how to fix it.. if you can help I would be VERY thankfull.. and
by the way.. this NEVER happened till i upgrade to IE7

You receive a "0x8007041D" error when you visit the Windows Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;902322

If this is not the case then check in the Event Viewer to see if there is any specific
errors regarding services
Start/Run/Eventvwr.msc

If the things in TaurArian's post didn't apply or work, it is most likely a COM+ issue.

First, verify that the "COM+ Event System" service is not disabled or not functioning:

Press Start and Run, and then run this command:
services.msc

Locate the "COM+ Event System" entry, and double click on it. Startup type should be set
to "Manual", and if the service is not already running, press the Start button to see if
it starts successfully.

If the steps above where ok, see if the steps in this previous post fixes the problem
(applies to WinXP as well):

Well Here Is My Update.... IT'S FIXED!!! :-)

I downloaded Service Pack 2 for IT Proffesionals like Charlie Suggested.
When I finished that part and tried to scan for updates again I still got the
same error message.

I then did the following suggested.

Click Start Click Run Enter MSXML3.DLL

I Restarted Puter And Went To Scan Again

Same Error Msg But This Time It Actually Repaired Missing Files And I Can
Download Updates Again YEAH!!

Never Thought I Would Be So Happy To See That Little Pop Up On My Toolbar
Telling Me There Are New Updates Found And Asking Me If I Want To Install
Them. LOL

I hope the others who posted were able to fix the same problem.
