"Files required to use Windows Update" loop

Everything worked fine through Feb 28th; now I get this message -"Files
required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your
computer. " I select "Register or reinstall the files for me now ", it
downloads and installs; then when I try to update I get the same message as
above. Legal copy of XP Pro, SP2. Help will be appreciated - thanks.
