Files required to use Windows Update ......

Hi, when I go to update it gives me the message 'Files required to use
Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer' and
the option to register or install now. So when I click yes, it does nothing
at all just keeps asking me the same thing. This is a desktop pc on windows
xp, can anyone help please.Thanks, Helen.

I believe Windows Update requires the use of Internet Explorer - what
browser are you using?

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?

Is this a sudden, new problem?

Is Automatic Updates enabled?

You receive error code 0x80244001 when you try to update the computer by
visiting the Microsoft Update Web site or the Windows Update Web site
["Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or
installed on your computer"]

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix the
problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

Hi, thanks for all your advice, I will try them out later today. I've had a
problem getting to read all your answers and think it's because I have to be
signed in to do it, as when you reply it sends me the email but when I click
on the link to read, it keeps taking me to a blank screen - so sorted now I
think
