Are these windows update files? example 8bfbbf38a1a12bcea25b0e1c ... is there
some way I can direct them to a folder? I don't mind the space, but they
really junk up my drive directories. Can they be deleted? or moved elsewhere?

Thanks Larry

Windows XP SP3

They can be deleted as they are temporary folders created when a Microsoft
patch, service pack, .etc is applied. (I usually reboot to clear any first
run actions the computer is supposed to take place after an update and then
delete said folders if still around.)

Tip: Unplug any USB keys before downloading/installing Windows Updates.

Neo ... THANKS for the help ... some of these folders/files are
write-protected ... is it safe to remove the protection and delete these as
well?

Thanks, Larry

Let me see if I got this right. You did say on the Root of the USB correct?

If yes this may not have anything to do with Windows updates, you should
state the name of the files.

Some USB Flash drives come with special software such as U3 (read about that
here http://tinyurl.com/m82nd )

Some come with special security tools such as tools so you can password
protect the contents of your USB drive.

I have never purchased a PNY drive that had any programs on the root. My
SanDisk drives came with security and other tools, can't remember what now.

I had once bought a Lexar that used a special tool to format which was on
the root and when I plugged that drive in it automatically installed some
files on my C drive when I tried to make a personal protected parition. need
less to say I do not ever purchase Lexar anymore.

Now what I did with the files on my SanDisk was to copy them to a CDRom and
then I deleted them knowing I did not want to use them. This way if I ever
change my mind I can recover the files in the future. I believe it had three
programs one was the security and the others were trial programs.

I hope I read correctly between the lines and answered this correctly for
you.

Sorry ... guess I wasn't clear ... I was not referring to a thumb drive ...
rather, I have two encased HD's each connected to my computer with USB cables
.... I keep getting MS Folders/files ... I think from Windows Update ... in
the root of these drives ... I was advised they could be deleted, but some
are read-only ... is it safe to delete the read-only files?

thanks, Larry
