Most probably the described problem was caused by Microsoft security
updates from February 2010 have it been. No other installations took
place in the related time span.

Windows XP SP3
No version of Visual Studio suite installed.
Some of installed application has applied once VS C++ 2008
Redistributable only on this machine.

Suddenly, I can see in the root of C:\ several files
of Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable installer.
Amongs others:
several eula.xxxx.txt files
several install.res.xxxx.dll
files
install.exe
install.ini
globdata.ini
VC_RED.cab
VC_RED.msi
vcredist.bmp

All these files are dated to Nov. 2007.

Where this bad practice from, to place installer files in the root of C:\?

PA Bear,

Actually I've seen this too, or something very similar, although I never got
around to figuring out why.

Harry.

Visual C++ runtimes are sometimes included with software as it's
required for the software to function.

Quicktime Alternative installs Visual C++ 2005 SP1;
Windows Live Essentials installs Visual C++ 2008, IIRC.
Silverlight may also come bundled with a C++ runtime but since I've
never installed it, I can not state that it actually does.

So the question is ... which recently installed software also installed
the C++ runtime ?
