Files won't transfer from Windows CE device

Hope someone here can help with this. My HP Jornada was connecting fine with
Windows XP SP1 through a serial/ USB converter using Activesync 3.1. I
installed SP2 a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday I discovered I have stopped
being able to transfer files from the Jornada to the PC. I can back up and
'explore' the device ok and apparently drag and drop the files between the
computers as always. Most of these are pocket word documents, and the
conversion process (pocket word to word) initiates and appears to proceed as
normal, but the file never turns up on the PC.

Activesync 4.1 does not work with the Jornada, so I upgraded Activesync to
3.8 with the same result - everything appears OK, the device is recognised
etc, files transfer from the PC to the Jornada with no problem but they will
not go the other way. There are no failure messages or warnings. I have
checked the firewall settings as per the Microsoft Activesync pages and
everything seems OK.

Any insights?

PaulF

Paul,

Some questions for you:

1. What Jornada model do you have?
2. In ActiveSync, do you have File syncing enabled? If not, try that and
see if that resolves the problem.
3. This worked previously - did you install a new application (PC or PPC)
since then that you can correlate to when this stopped working? Have you
tried to uninstall that application?

Regards,

Hello Clinton. Thanks for your extremely fast and helpful reply.

Sorry, I deleted the identity of the Jornada from my post by accident - it's
a 680e.

I've had problems before with syncing files through Activesync - the worst
kind of problems, with entire files disappearing! So syncing was not
enabled. As you advised I have now enabled it for files and this does work -
it will transfer files in this way. So this is a partial cure and a big
medal to you! Many thanks Clinton.

But it is not the ideal solution for me and I would like to get back to my
tried and trusted 'drag and drop' method if possible. I have updated some
applications recently - the most significant of which is certainly SP2. It
has been problematic on this computer before, so on the manufacturers
recommendation I reverted to SP1 for some time. This time all seems fine
except in this regard. I will take your advice and try backtracking through
the other changes too.

Best wishes
PaulF

Paul,

Okay, good. A partial fix at least.

What ActiveSync version are you using?

The problem with not having SP2 loaded up is related to security issues in
XP. It is something you should have loaded up.

Let me know what you find on the other apps.

Regards,

Hello again Clinton

It's Activesync 3.8.

The computer is a Medion and had hardware issues with SP2. These seem to
have been addressed by later versions of SP2.

More when the experiments on the other applications are done!

Best wishes

When you reverted from 4.1 to 3.8, did you manually delete the dll's a
modify the registry per tips on http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/ ?

Do you still have the activesync CD that shipped with the device?

Hello Beverly

Thanks for that. I'm working through the items on that page. I edited the
registry between installations using Spybot, Ashampoo Winoptimizer and by
hand, but I will certainly revisit that aspect.

Yes, I still have the disk - it contains Activesync 3.0 but 3.1 was already
installed on the computer and worked fine with it. until the current
problems.
