Find how many updates are waiting on remote machine?

Is there a way to find out how many Windows Updates are waiting on a remote
machine to be installed? I want to scan about 1000 machines to see how many
machines are waiting for updates to be installed and how many. The machines
are all Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines. Thanks.
