Firefox & DEP

Firefox frequently stops working and this seems to have something to do DEP
(Data Execution Prevention) as the DEP icon appears in th system tray after
each crash. I have tried to turn off DEP for Firefox but system insists
that Firefox must run with DEP on. Is there a solution to this problem?

The solution is to figure out why Firefox stops working. Unfortunately, we
don't have enough information about your system to troubleshoot it. Try
running with no add-ons. Look in the Event Viewer. Answer the standard
questions and refer to the "how to post" links to fill in the details in
your next post.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

One possibility, from 'Issues related to plugins - MozillaZine Knowledge
Base' (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Issues_related_to_plugins) :

"NPTURNMED.dll - The Turner Media Plugin initiates Data Execution
Prevention (DEP) on Windows Vista and crashes Firefox 3 ('bug 427382'

Also, go to 'Index page • mozillaZine Forums'
(http://forums.mozillazine.org/) ; there, on the right side, in the
Search/Boards box, type "DEP" (without the quotation marks), which will
give you some fifty entries for your reading delectation.

Q: "My car has a flat tire every morning. What can I do"
A: "Drive your other car".

or the traditional:

Q: "Doc, it hurts when I do this".
A: "Then don't do that"

Except that IE7 is also bug ridden... so it's hardly a "solution"...
just an "alternative".

FYI - one of the common suggested fixes for IE7 problems is "install
IE8".

I also get the same problem with IE8 on a Windows Vista Home macine. Have
not found a soultion yet. Tried to make IE an exception in the system
settings but that did not work either. So, I tried Firefox also and get the
error a lot less with it than I do with IE8.

> Just a word of warning for Firefox users, If you are using Zone Alarm for your Firewall, you can have problems with Firefox not being able to restart if you turn it off, and possibly not being able to turn off Vista. when you want to shut down the computer. I have removed Zone Alarm and replaced it with Comodo Firewall.

This has resolved problem for me, and have done that on another computer
that has Vista with Zone Alarm, and will see how that goes. It doesn't seem
to make sense the a Firewall would cause problems between Firefox and Vista,
but it does, and if you are having problems with Firefox stopping while you
are browsing, that will resolve that problem also. Anyone with Vista and
Firefox is strongly advised by me to remove Zone Alarm and replace it with
Comodo. Comodo is about 75 meg in size, so it could take a while download it
with a slow internet connection.
