My machine has WIN2000 and recently started using FireFox as my browser. I
previously had the system set for Automatic Updates so that I would get all
the patches from Microsoft but recently noticed that it is not working with
FireFox. I searched the FAQs etc but really didn't see the solution other
than having to manually run the update. There has to be a better way. Is
anyone familar with how to set it up on a WIN2000 machine using FireFox?

Windows Update only works with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Carey,

Thanks for responding so quickly. If I may, another question. If I set
"automatic update" in the control panel to just download the updates but not
install, will that at least give me the critical updates which I can then
install later?

Thanks,

Stan

Yes, as long as Internet Explorer is set as your default browser.

Carey,

OK so it's a lose-lose situation for me since I use FireFox as my default
browser. I'll just have to remind myself to run the updates manually.

I can understand why MS would do it this way but at the same time, if
security is as big a priority for them as they make it out to be, one would
think that they would overlook the competition and take the moral high ground.

Oh well, I guess I do live in a dream world where doing the right thing is
more important then the profit.

Thanks again for the help and although I am not happy, I appreciate your
honest answers.

Have a good day,

Stan

What? Wrong. I just used Auto Update on one of my computers yesterday
that has Firefox set as its default browser. How do you explain that?

No, Carey's wrong (again). I have all my computers with Firefox as the
default browser and all of them can use Automatic Updates the way you
want to.

I do, however, recommend that prior to setting it to download that you
set a restore point and clean your computer up, followed by a defrag.

Well, I truly do not have a great amount of experience with computers
(although I've used them since 1988) but as I've observed from my own
experience, what Carey has said appears to be true if you are running Windows
2000. At work I run XP and autoupdate works just fine. Can I explain the
difference, no, except that I am using different operating systems, hence
there may be a difference in the code that prevents it from working. So be
it. Do I wish otherwise, yes.

As with other comments on other posts, please understand that the people you
may be responding to know little about the finer workings of their computers
and therefore your suggestions will only be helpful if you provide sufficient
information for them to actually do as you suggest. Splashing your
"knowledge" about without details is useless.

Please do not take my comments as a slight but I think for most of the
people who post here, they are looking for answers and care little about
bashing MS. They already know that MS has problems (that's why they are
here), so just give a useful answer and stow the slander and anger.

Thank you

Care to give an example or do you just want to "splash" your opinion
without details?

Hey, Stan

For whatever it might be worth, there is an extension that lets you add an
Internet Explorer tab to Firefox. I've used it and it seems to work fine,
even for updates.

Last time I checked, this was one of the most popular extensions, so it
shouldn't be too hard to find.

Regards.
