Firefox as defeault web browser

When I first installed Vista and configured my computer, I installed Firefox
web browser. When Firefox Beta 3 was released, I downloaded it to see the
new changes. Firefox Beta 3 was automatically assigned as my default web
browser- something I didn't particularly want since I'd rather use v. 2 til
v. 3 comes out of beta. After deciding to hold off on Firefox Beta 3, I
unistalled it which caused my default web browser to default to Internet
Explorer. Naturally I loaded up Firefox v. 2 and approved it to be my
default web browser. However, Internet Explorer is still my default, and I
can't seem to change it. No matter how many times I load Firefox and tell it
to be the default, I am still seeing Internet Explorer as my default. When I
go to Default Programs, click on Internet Explorer, and then click to set the
Program Associations, all of the Extensions, Protocols, and Start Menu
options are checked. Furthermore, the arrows are grayed out and I cannot
change them- kinda defeats the purpose of allowing us to set our own
defaults. Any suggestions?

Mine seemed to be grayed our also. What if you go to control
panel-->programs-->Default programs-->Associate a file type..., can you
change them here?

Looks to me that you can not deselect an extension program associations, you
must first go to the altenate program that you want to use and check the
empty box for the same extension and this will remove the check that is
grayed out on the other program.

I reckon that could be a good work around though I'm still curious as to why
the feature doesn't function the way it should. I'll give it a go when I get
into work tomorrow.

My main gripe with Vista is that obvious features really aren't so obvious
or don't work the way that they appear they would. I still haven't figured
how to get a blocked startup program to run automatically after following
advice to run it as administrator or by creating a task schedule for it. And
of course seeing the program listed through Windows Defender and marked as
Enabled doesn't get me any closer to solving the problem once and for all.

In a slightly related problem to the original post, Internet Explorer always
launches when I follow a link from a Trillian instant message. Even with
Firefox set to be the default web browser with all the defaults, Internet
Explorer still loads. In XP, followed links correctly went to Firefox. This
problem could extend passed Trillian: I just happen to know it exists in
Trillian and could be in other instant messenger programs.

I have had the EXACT same problem as the original poster. I installed
Beta 3, ditched it for several reasons, and have not been able to
associate Firefox as my default browser ever since, despite answering
that question over and over whenever Firefox opens. In the Default
Programs page it does not even give me the option of to make Firefox my
default browser. I get error messages every time I try to click on a
link in Outlook to launch a webpage.

I guess, I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox AGAIN (I had to
do this on my laptop for other reasons).

I've learned a valuable lesson - never to try beta software for any
reason. I always end up with these kinds of problems when I do.

Well reinstalling solved one problem. Firefox is now my default browser

within and Outlook email message

"This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on thi
computer. Please contact your system administrator

Well, I'm my system administrator and no such restrictions were i
effect before this firefox beta fiasco! Dang

You receive an error message when you click a hyperlink in Microsoft Outlook:
http://www.winhelponline.com/article...t-Outlook.html

.... and then try changing back to Firefox.

reinstalled Firefox 2, I had the same set of problems that this threa
is about.

But as per my prior post, I followed the instructions in the threa
suggested by MS-MVP and everything is working swimmingly again - a
least on this issue! :
