Firefox questions

Pardon for posting this here, if tenuously I and you may be using
Firefox with Vista - but I was wondering about the webmail add-on for
Firefox. There are about 8 different types of account to choose from
but I imagine you can add others? It lists Gmail and hotmail, but my
google email account has a googlemail.com suffix and my hotmail
account has a .co.uk ending. Can I do anything about this?

I have started to gravitate towards Firefox use though I'm still using
IE most of the time, and I'm wondering if the arguments made for
Firefox use over IE are honest, or whether there's something I've not
yet added, because it seems graphically glitchy. Comparing looking at
a MySpace website for example, in Firefox the page elements are at
least sometimes dumped haphazardly on the screen at first before being
arranged correctly, which doesn't happen with IE. Also an X in a box
can very briefly be shown instead of a picture. It's not terrible,
and things do improve once a new site has been used once by me, but I
was thinking that people are just touchy about Microsoft's success,
for whatever reasons, and are deceiving themselves about Firefox - and
OpenOffice, and Linux - which all seem more buggy and glitchy than my
experience of Microsoft stuff, imperfect though it is. I can agree
with use of these alternatives to fight a ridiculously wealthy
company's dominance and dodgy business practice, but I don't fancy
underscoring such an attitude with self-deception about
functionality.

Anyway, pardon the no-doubt unoriginal opinions, it was really only
the enquiry about webmail and whether my Firefox picture glitches are
rectifiable that I'm meaning to emphasise here.

Not a Vista issue. Here are links for Firefox support. I would post your
questions and thoughts in one of the Firefox user forums, which are quite
active.

Hi Lee

Pertinent or not, here are some answers;
(I also use FF with Vista).

The webmail add-on comes in two sections:


- main Webmail app
- specific additional addons, e.g. Webmail-hotmail, webmail-yahoo

When you add webmail-hotmail, you implicitly add a number of
sub-domains, like hotmail.co.uk, hotmail.fr, etc

I personally us webmail under Thunderbird only, not as a Firefox add-on.
However, I'm quite sure the principle is the same.

Finally, as the other posters have said, the best place to ask these
questions is the newsgroups:

for Firefox: mozilla.support.firefox
for Thunderbird: mozilla.support.thunderbird

I don't use Firefox and don't know the answer, but let me point out
that you are asking a Firefox question in a Windows XP newsgroup.
Firefox is not part of Windows. Your question is off-topic here, and
most important, you are much more likely to get the help you're
looking for if you would ask in a Firefox (or general browser)
newsgroup instead. That's where you are much more likely to find
Firefox experts.

Personally, I'm not at all fond of Firefox, and don't use it. My
recommendation is that you consider the free Maxthon instead. Maxthon
is not a stand-alone browser, but is a front end for Internet
Explorer, providing lots of excellent extra features. I like it a lot,
and consider it to be significantly better than Firefox, but you
should try it, and decide for yourself what you think of it.

Regarding your experiences with some webpages not displaying correctly in
FF. I added a add on called IE Tab. After that I never went back to IE. IE
Tab is a add on that will open a website within FF but display it using IE
settings. If you run into a problem with a webpage not displaying properly,
just open IE Tab and add the page to the list. Once it is on the list it will
always open in FF using the IE settings each time you visit the site. It will
also open links from the original site using iE settings. All this happens
seamlessly within FF. The only thing even indicating it is happening is the
FF icon down in the bottom right hand corner of the browser will change to a
IE icon when you have a webpage open that is using the IE settings.

IMO this is the best add on for FF ever created.

Uninstall FireFox. It's sorta a lousy piece of software with a lot of
security issues people are in denial over.
