I read a couple of times in this newsgroup , that the firewall should be
off ,when downloading SP2. Is this correct ?? It seems to be contrary to
advice previously given.
I shall not download anything, before I have a definite answer to this
question.

Thanks . Phil

IF you are getting the full network install version, while downloading that thing (not updating) you may keep your firewall on.
Turn it off prior to beginning of update process.

If you are doing the online Windows Update (starting this week), then you may turn the firewall off ---- to minimize chances of a failed setup.

What to know before you download and install Windows XP SP2:

I haven't seen any guidance from Microsoft on this question, which suggests
that it is irrelevant. Leave your firewall on if you choose and the install
should work just fine. Who suggested that it should be off?

Besides, as I advise everyone who is paranoid about this service pack, there
are plenty of backup options available today to completely protect your
system before attempting any major change like this, so if you don't have a
backup plan in place first, don't bother.
