OS Vista Ultimate SP2
Firewall Zone Alarm 8.0.298.000 free edition

I have random slow bootups that I have traced to the Zone Alarm file
VSMON.EXE I would like to replace Zone Alarm with another Firewall.

I would like to hear your suggestions for another free firewall
replacement. Please advise.

Regards,

How about the built-in Windows one? If you're behind a NATS router, that's
all you need...

Yeah, I was thinking about that. But ZA asks if a program wants to
connect to the Internet. I didn't think that the Windows FW did that.
BTW, I am behind a router.

Why do you feel that is important?

Windows firewall doesn't do that.

Think about it: if something "bad" has gotten in, then it's probably
way too late to worry about it getting back out... right?

Use the built-in firewall and find something else to worry about.

Don't you want to know if some program from your computer is trying to
connect to the Net?? Many times a program being used within the PC is
trying to connect even though the connection was not necessary and with
ZA I could refuse the connection. Of course, you wouldn't know that a
connection was being attempted if your FW doesn't advise you of same.

Remove ZA, activate the Vista firewall and install this:
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/index.html
(free version available)
http://sphinx-soft.com/Vista/order.html
Now you can see which programs want to go out.

Unfortunately a lot of the folks around here have a theory that you
only need to know what MS thinks you need to know.

Thanks Fred. I'll check it out. Maybe that is the answer.
