ok, this is thanks to Ottmar Freudenberger.

I narrowed it down to the following Registry Key
(at least on my machine: XP Pro)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\CLSID]
@="{0000031A-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}"

This was after about an hour of comparing the registry pre-KB896688 install
and then post-KB896688 install. I hope that this helps anyone that is still
having this problem. Goodluck everyone!!!

By the way, you will need to restart your machine for the fix to go through.

Again, a HUGE thanks to Ottmar Freudenberger for pointing toward the
problem, as well as everyoen else that has posted fixes for this problem.

Quick question: So should we just delete this registry key, or are we
supposed to fix it somehow (sorry, I'm totally a newbie at this, I just
happened to notice you had the same problem as I did)

Nope, it should look like Magickat posted. That's what the REG
file contained in http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip
is doing.

Bye,
Freudi

Many thanks to Freudi as running that registry patch cured me of a problem
that has been bugging me for ages.

Thanks again

Bob

Well it would be like Ottmar said.

I found that on my machine that this entry in the registry was missing.
I have since fixed almost all the machines at my place of work this way, so
I am really confindent in believing that this is one of the roots of the
problem.

Sorry if I didn't make it that part clear. That key is most likely missing
and needs to be added in to the registry, and the other keys appear on the
registering of the ole32.dll

Something that was suggested but not tired (for good reasons) was to
un-register the ole32.dll and then re-register it, but this is a key system
..dll and it COULD (most likely WILL) break the system. I personally don't
know if this fixes the registry keys or not since I am not willing to break
my machine to find out.

Anyways, mhsmith, best of luck, and I hope that this helps you out

Thank you very much.

I had most of the same problems and possibly some others.
I finally gave up, uninstalled, and hid the KB896688 update.

Tried your fix tonight and all seems to be working well now.

Bye Don
