This is a suggestion to Microsoft. I totally understand that you don't want
people installing Vista on a machine when they don't have a valid OS already
but XP and previous versions had a reasonable solution: just show the setup
program that you have the original OS media and the CD Key and it worked just
fine. Now you have this ridiculous restriction which prevents people from
installing Vista unless XP is already installed. I think this is insulting to
your customers and will result in huge headaches for PC enthusiasts
especially but also normal customers.
I know you have a lot of faith in your restoration and recovery process but
I don't. I know that people quite honestly **** UP their computers. Whether
its a virus, or overwriting files or whatever I'm never cease to be amazed by
the ability of people to screw up their computers. What should these people
do when they do that and Vista won't reinstall? What about when I replace my
motherboard and processor? Previously it was STRONGLY recommended that you
format your hard drive and reinstall your OS. Will that even work now? Why
should I go through the trouble of installing XP and possibly causing data
loss due to XP trying to overwrite certain files or due to me needing to
format the hard drive due to file system corruption?
This is a dumb restriction that causes people a massive headache and helps
no one. (except maybe MS and their bottom line)
