This is for anyone who's having trouble with WU (BITS/AU):
http://castlecops.com/t106642-How_To...ly_Edited.html
[I wrote it -- I would have posted the entire set of
instructions here, but I wasn't sure if I could upload
the Zip file with the Registry fixes on this N.G., so
anyone could subsequently download it. However,
the necessary File ready for downloading, along with the
lengthy instructions are all located at the above link.]

If the above link doesn't work, go to:
http://castlecops.com/
Click "Forums" right below the Castlecops logo,
then go to the "General Computer Problems" Forum
(2nd one down), click on it and look for the Topic called:
"How To Fix Windows Update (BITS/AU)".

[As of THIS writing (2/25/06 3:00 PM EST),
it was on the 1st page (on top) and the 'Last Post'
was made on Sat. Feb. 25, 2006 at 2:54 PM]

If you're not a member and want to register for a
free account, go to:
http://castlecops.com/
[Look on the bottom of the Login box on the right side
and click where it says:
"Click here to create a registered account" (and follow the
instructions from there).]

Hope it helps somebody here (it sure seemed like it did at CC)...
[A year later and it's received about 44,000 hits, about 4,000
downloads and hundreds of responses, suggestions, additions,
questions and "thank you's," so I guess it's helped a few people
at least...]

Hi Mike,

I've just done a quick review of that page. Can you post back with the original problem that you had & hopefully also the initial Error code?
I take it the major problem area you had was with BITS & the folder permissions. Is that correct?
And that the initial problem showed up in the "download phase". Is that correct?

Hi Maurice,

That was written over a year ago and it happened
further back than that (from Dec. '04 through Jan. '05).
I just looked at my Update History and it doesn't
give Error Codes for those two months of failures.
I couldn't possibly remember all the original
Error Codes I received. Sorry!

I had multiple problems (including needing to add
that Zip File) to the Registry. I had trouble in all
phases and areas (noted in all my steps). After
looking at hundreds of references and sites on
the Net, I came to the conclusion that no one had
written a (fairly) comprehensive write-up about all
the problems w/BITS/AU.

So I sat down and compiled everything I had read,
advice from the MS Tech. Rep. and everything I had
learned on my own through trial and error (I'm a
programmer, btw) and took about 3 days or so to write
up what you see there. It, of course, doesn't take into
account EVERY Error Code (that would require a book!).

While it's, by no means, complete, it seems to have
helped thousands of people in the last year (judging
from all the e-mails and PMs I've received on CastleCops
and AumHa (and here too, since I've posted it about
once a week or so to this N.G. for the last year)).

Best,

Mike_________
