Is there a fix to Windows XP SP2 slowness due to Windows Update process? I
have 3 FRESH windows XP SP2 installs that are slow after running the patches
and having the automatic updates turned on? I read some threads before and
can be confirmed using Process Explorer by Sysinternals (now MS).

Question is - what's the fix asides from temporary disabling Automatic
Updates / Windows Update?

How many patches were installed to the 'FRESH XP SP2 installs' ?
There is no permanent fix that I know of. There is a temporary workaround.
If you need/want it, just ask.

MowGreen,

Is this problem related to svchost.exe continuously running in the
background and using up most of the CPU resources resulting in a very
sluggish PC? Whether it is or not can you please post the temporary
workaround you mentioned below.

Additionally, would you be able to breifly describe what the issue is with
this particular problem that slows a system down.

Many Thanks!

KCC

KCC,

If I knew how to fix the svchost/CPU, MS would hire me <w>. To get
around this issue temporarily, try these steps :

1. Delete the contents of the WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download
folder [ *Usually* resolves install issues ]

2. Stop the Automatic Update service
Delete the contents of WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder
Restart AU

3. If the first 2 steps bring no joy -
Stop AU
Delete or rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
Restart AU

There are 3 MS Knowledge Base articles for the issue :

FIX: When you run Windows Update to scan for updates that use Windows
Installer, including Office updates, CPU utilization may reach 100
percent for prolonged periods
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089

The FIX for the above FIX [ I kid you not ] :
You receive an access violation when you try to install an update from
Windows Update after you apply hotfix package 916089
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

Separate from those is :
The Automatic Updates service may stop responding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914810

The first two deal with an updated version of msi.dll and appear to be
directly related to MU and Office.
The third one states
> The Automatic Updates service may increase memory consumption over time and may
> eventually become unresponsive.

That is not the same as the CPU issue.

Confusing, no ? I'd try the first 3 things I suggested prior to
contactin MS for a temporary hotfix.

IMHO, the *BIG* issue is that XP needs SERVICE PACK 3 so that the
scanning by AU doesn't have to go over the entire registry and system to
find files/bits/settings that need updating. I doubt that the msi.dll is
the major culprit, but then again, I don't have Office installed and
just briefly see a spike in CPU useage when the system first comes
online and svchost spawns AU.
