I'm on a corporate network and some machines will update and some will give
me this error 0x80072F78. Machines that are quite old seem to work but fresh
installs seem to have problems.
After wasting the best part of a day looking on Microsoft sites and this
forum and trying all suggestions but to no avail, I clicked on the
Administrator options and then the "Update multiple operating systems".
Click on
"Windows Update Catalog." You then have 2 options:
1. Find updates for Microsoft Windows operating systems
2. Find driver updates for hardware devices
Select Option 1 and then OS drop down list in my case XP SP1 and then
search. You can select any Microsoft OS to get downloads. You then get 3
choices: -
The numbers in brackets are on my system, Yours should be different
1. Critical Updates and Service Packs (87)
2. Multi-Language Features (23)
3. Recommended Updates (51)
Select which option applies to you, in my case Option 1, go through the list
and click on Add for the downloads you require. When you have done click on
"Go to Download Basket" and click on Browse and select a location for all the
downloads to go to. I personally sent them to the Desktop and they all went
into a folder. You then have to individually install each patch. When you
are downloading these patches you might notice that some fail to download,
this is because they are already installed (Check in Add/Remove Programs).
Takes a bit of extra time to install these patches and still doesen't solve
my Automatic Windows Update problem, but rather than waiting for this to be
solved and wasting lots of valuable time, I shall perform this task on a
weekly basis.
Hope this is of some use to everybody who has been suffering from the same
problem.
