Fixed Disk Failure after installing Windows Updates

We recently received our laptop back from Acer repair. This was the 2nd time
it has been in for repair. The first time they replaced the motherboard and
this time they replaced the hard drive. After starting it back up and
getting everything all set up again there were a lot of Windows Updates that
needed to be installed. The first 2 updates to install were Installer 3.1
(?) and those seemed to install fine and cause no problems. Once those were
installed Windows Update found 88 updates that needed to be downloaded and
installed. So I download everything and turn off the computer for them to
install. They seem to install fine during shutdown but then when I turn my
computer on I get the fixed disk failure message. The computer was working
fine before installing these updates. What gives? I've tried this twice
now. I called Acer after the first time thinking it was a problem with the
new harddrive (which is still a possibility) and they had me to a full
restore and then told me to be careful about installing Windows Updates and
to actually turn automatic updates off. However, we want our computer
protected.

Anyone have any similar problems after installing updates?

It has nothing to do with MS Updates.

You bought a lemon computer -- junk!

Similar errors encountered with recent Windows Updates. I am running a
2.4GHz Celeron PC and in December I got an update from Windows that daused
blue screen crashes. Just before the crash I would get a USB error message,
then a blue screen. Microsoft have ignored this problem and not given any
help. I now have another Celeron machine with the same problem.

I have done a re-install, and turned off the Automatic Windows update - this
has stopped the blue screen crashes, but I am missing out on important
updates.

It's not your fixed disk or your PC that is in error. Nor is it my PC that
is in error, I have turned on Automatic updates and got exactly the same
fault, so I restore the system to a time prior to the update, turn off
updates and there is no problem.

BSoD contitions are NOT the same as a "fixed disk failure message".
Not even close.

One is an OS problem, the other a hardware problem and Windows Updates won't cause the hard
disk to fail.
