Fixed Windows Update stopping at "Checking for Latest ..."

I found a post in another thread and it fixed my problem:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgr.dll
regsvr32.exe qmgrprxy.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try again.
