I had the same problems that everyone else had, but I'm running W2K Pro.
Never had any problems until recently, then suddenly WinUpdate and MS Update
started to hang and then timeout with error 0x8DDD0009.

I went to IE/Tools/Properties/Connections and re-ran the Connection Setup
Wizard -- even though my Internet connection seemed to be working okay.

After doing this, Windows Update was working again!

Please post here to report whether or not this works for you, too.

Good luck.

Jim

You're the man Jim...Had this problem on a fresh install of win2k sp4 with
ie6... it just sat there on windows update......and then timed out after
about 20 mins.

Tried flushing the cache and using automatic updates, nada... then , as per
jims suggestion, re-ran the internet connection wizard and BOOM it worked
first time.

thanks jim

could an MS techie explain what the underlying problem and fix is here ??

cheers!

Same thing for me, re-ran Internet Connection Wizard and it works.

Why MS staff are not post this solution??

After doing all of the suggested fixes, I have found that it is necessary to
add several sites to the list of trusted sites under Internet
Options/Security/Trusted Sites

http://*.microsoftupdate.microsoft.com/
http://update.microsoft.com/
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
http://*.microsoftupdate.com
http://*.microsoft.com

(this last one bothers me but without it, in the lower right of IE, you get
Mixed Sites instead of Trusted Sites so I don't have all of the right
specific sites listed in the previous 4 urls). I've also tried adding the
https versions of all of these.

restart the computer
let automatic updates run at least once

However, I have one machine that even this didn't fix so your mileage may
vary.
