I've tried the fixes. The RPC service is configured correctly; the sc sdset
wuausrv...command generated a Success response; I've been through MS
knowledge base and it isn't offering any new suggestions. Does anyone have
any more ideas? I have not installed sp2 but have installed the blocker
(from MS) to prevent sp2 from being downloaded to my computer. I still,
however should be able to recieve other updates.
Thanks
Kat

I have to agree with kat--i have done everything as well. And yet, i still
continue to get this error on at least 2 different computers. What is the
deal?

The user account which it has logged on, when you have belonged to the Guests
group or the Users group, is a possibility 0x800A0046 error occurring.

You can try this method below,

user account: Administrator

Click the [Start], right click the [My Computer], click [Management],
Select the [ The local user and the group ], click the [the user], double
click the[Administrator], clicks the tub [The group which belongs ], delete
the [guests group]
