Fixing Issues Id'ed with scannow

OK I should probably know the answer to this one, but I periodically run
scannow on vista x64, vista x86, and xp mce 2005 computers. Usually auto
repair works. Recently, on the mce 2005 computer I have begun to get
requests to insert the XP Professional SP3 cd's. Can I get around this? If
not, can I get cd's from MS for free or a nominal cost?

For XP any MCE disk will still see the I386 folder needed by the sfc
tool. The initial process when started is to first verify the system
files found on the current installation before replacing any found
damaged or missing. If you are still able in case of a preinstalled OS
you can also follow support instructions for creating a set of recovery
disks if this is on a premade machine there.

Hi rak--

This is only an issue on XP. Why is a good question, since it underwent
Beta testing and is now on its 3rd Service Pack. XP released in 2001, and
it's 8 years later. You won't encounter it running SFC in Vista, or Win 7.

Great info Chad and Night Hawk. I've read through the link provided and dug
out the original recovery disks I made. Tonight I'll go through the process
and report back. Thanks for your help.

No luck. I went through all of the steps at Mark's site without success.
From my restore cd's I downloaded the i386 folder to root of C: and moved
the HKLM pointer in Windows Current Version from C:\Windows to C:\. Also
moved the Windows NT Current Version pointer from D:\i386 to C:\i386 and
checked to make sure that the HKLM ServicePackSourcePath is pointed
correctly. Restarted and tried scannow again. Unfortunately, I still get
numerous messages requesting that I install the XP Professional SP3
Installation CD. Seems to me that it is Service Pack related, but I really
don't want to reinstall SP3 just to run a successful scannow. Any other
thoughts?
