Flash player security update failed

An automatic update to flash player (KB923789) has apparently downloaded to
my computer. When I shut down it says it is installing updates but never
does. This has been going on for over a week, every day. When I check the
update it tells me it has already downloaded it to my computer and will
install it when I shut down. The add and remove programs list does not have
this update in it.
How do I get it either downloaded or removed?

Remove WU downloads from the temporary folder:-

Stop the Automatic Updates service

Click Start, Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Stop.
Stopping the service will take a moment.

Delete the contents of the Download folder
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Click OK.
Open the Download folder.
Delete all contents of the Download folder.
Close the window.

Start the Automatic Updates service
Click Start. Choose Run.
In the Run box, type services.msc.
Click OK.
Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
Click Start.
Starting the service will take a moment.

By deleting the contents of the Download folder - you have removed any downloaded
updates.

uninstall by using the Adobe Flash Player Uninstaller

After downloading flash, does one then apply the patch?

If it's the latest version, 9,0,45,0, then no patching is necessary.
