Attempting transfer of excel (.xls) from Vista Laptop to non-Vista. After
placing files on stick (files end in .xls). Upon transfer to non-Vista
computer, files are XLS and do not have the excel icon. Files are not
readable.
PLEASE HELP!

Do you have Excel or the Word/Excel Reader installed on the non-Vista
computer? (what is the "non-Vista" OS?)

Exactly what does "Files are not readable" mean? What happens when you
try? If you get an error message, please quote it verbatim.

Vista vs. non-Vista is completely irrelevant here. This is an
application issue, not an operating system issue.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that Excel is installed on
the non-Vista computer. Excel is not a part of any version of Windows,
and may or may not be installed on it.

Assuming that Excel is installed, what version of Excel is installed
on each computer? If the Vista computer has Excel 2007, and the
non-Vista computer has an earlier version, check very carefully to
make sure that the extension of the files is .xls, and not .xlsx
(Excel 2007's new default extension). If it is .xlsx, in Excel 2007,
save the files using "Save as," and choose to save with the older .xls
extension.
