Folder names missing

My brother, without internet access, just called with a question that I
couldn't answer (one of many).

Windows Vista Home Premium.
When he opens Windows Explorer (Ctrl+E) and clicks on the Pictures folder,
all of the sub-folders appear in the panel at the right as icons as
expected, but no folder names appear. What could he have done to cause this?

Thanks,
