Folder permissions

When I mount an Acronis backup image of an old Vista machine and attempt to
look at Users>Jan folder I am told "You don't currently have permission to
access this folder - click continue to get access to this folder". On doing
this I get the message "You have been denied permisssion to access this
folder - to gain access you will have to use the Security Tab". I don't
seem to be able to do anything on the security tab to get the necessary
permission.

I desperately need to retrieve some files in this folder and would greatly
appreciate information on how to access this folder.

I assume you're mounting the image in Windows. If this is correct, take
ownership of it.

A. Check the permissions of the file or folder the file is saved in and take
ownership:

1. Right-click the file or folder, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Under Group or user names, click your name to see the permissions you
have.

To open a file, you need to have read permission. For more information on
permissions, see What are permissions?

To take ownership of a folder:

1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click
Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
3. Click Edit. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.
4. Click the name of the person you want to give ownership to.
5. If you want that person to be the owner of files and subfolders in this
folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
6. Click OK

You can't do this from a Standard user account.

Hi jan,

You may have to take ownership of the files first

you will then have to check the permissions on the Folder/Files you
wish to work with.

On the security tab click on add then add your user name to the list of
permissions and set you permissions to Full control

Oh, so you went to the Security tab for that folder as user/admin and
all the buttons that are going allow you to do anything are disabled
locked-out, kind of a protected folder?

You'll find that on Vista in some situations of folder or files
permissions in the user security of them. The screen for the Security
tab and all buttons are disable. That's because your Vista user/admin
account or a new user/admin accounts are not Admin with full rights.

You have to enable the hidden built-in Administrator account and use
that account on the folder.

When you go back to the folder using that account, the Advanced button
will be enabled. With that button, you will be able to take Ownership of
the folder, which in turn, it will give you ownership of everything in
the folder, that is pointing to TrustedInstaller as the owner.

You can use Edit button to change ownership of the folder. At the very
least, you should be able to change it over to the Administrators group
that will have full rights, and you are a part of that group, even as
the other Vista user/admin account that was given to you before the
activation of Administrator account.

Note: For me, the Advanced button has been locked out as just a
user/admin not using the Administrator account. It is now active just as
being user/admin. I don't know if it's due to me leaving the
Administrator account active on the machine, before that that Adv button
was disabled too.

But I still can't use that Edit button to add new, update or delete user
account permissions, with either admin account.

Hey, one other thing. For me, I went to the <C> drive and added a new
user account called 'Montgumdrop' with full rights on <C>, which is the
account-id I login with as user/admin.

That account shows on the Owner tab screen, so I can take ownership of
the folder with the Montgumdrop account or Administrators group account.
