How to force correct screen resolution?

Although I have the "Vista drivers" for my HP L1940T 19" LCD monitor, Vista
doesn't accept them and refuses to output higher than 1024 x 768, yet I'm
running XP on a dual boot system and XP happily sends out 1280 x 1024 via
Plug & Play monitor on Radeon 9600 series.

Is there any way to force Vista to output 1280 x 1024? I'm using a DVI
cable as I need the analogue to output to a WS TV for films.

Answering my own question, I did a full reinstall with two similar monitors
connected to the dvi and analogue ports. This forced the correct resolution
on both channels. I then saved a system restore point, just in case.
