Windows downloaded some updates, asked "Install Now or Later?" I chose
later... now it keeps reminding at an inconvenient time. How can I chose to
install the updates when I want if the little yellow shield isn't present in
the task bar?

It is on my wife's work PC and it pop's up "Install now..." when she is
logged on to her work and can't install just then, but when it is a
convenient time, there is no little yellow shield to click to install...
where are the downloaded files stored? how can I install them when I want
to, not when windows wants to?

Change the settings so that *you* completely control when you download and
install updates instead of allowing Windows to automate any of it.

Just have it notify you if you cannot manage to remember to check for new
updates on the second Tuesday of each month.

Also - next time you might want to specify what Operating System you are
speaking of.

BTW - I wonder if you were to shutdown the computer - it would give you the
option to install updates and then shut down. ;-)

(Windows XP sp2..). Actually I do have it set (now) on the red shield (total
manual update) but what happened is,... before, I had it set to the yellow
shield (ask me what-when) and my wife clicked OK on a pop-up and it
apparently downloaded several updates including SP2, it installed sp2 and
apparently had to restart before the other downloads would install.

(I'm guessing, because immediately after installing and restarting the SP2
download, I set it to the red shield, so that is the only way these updates
in question could have been downloaded)

I did try restarting and a cold start to prompt for the updates but nothing,
that is why I want to know if there is a trick to force the yellow shield
(near clock) to appear so I can install the (pesky to my wife) downloads...
(whew, breath... ... ...)

It may or may not work:
Click Start, select Run and then type in: wuauclt.exe /detectnow
