Force a Windows Update detection with group policies

I have pushed out the policies settings to my users to turn on Windows Update
to run at 10am every day and prompt them to re-boot, if needed. All the
machines in question are Windows XP SP2. But, with some of my staff, it
appears that the updates are never downloaded to be available for Windows
Update to use at 10am. What do I have to check or change so the detection
process will begin at 8:30 so everything will be ready at 10am?

Thanks.
