Forced restarts after updates

This week we've had several users complain of XP forcing a restart after
installing the most recent updates. One user actually lost some data while
he was out to lunch, but we were fortunately able to recover both lost
documents.

I actually got to see the dialog being displayed yesterday. You have the
option to "Restart Now" or "Restart Later" with a progress bar counting down
from 5 minutes.

Neither I or our head Network Admin recall users ever having problems with
this prior to this week. Any suggestions on why this is suddenly an issue
for us?

Nothing's new or changed with that behavior.

Always assume an update will require a reboot.

If your users are updating via Automatic Updates (vs WSUS), consider
changing the AU setting to "Download but notify" so that they'll (1) know
when an update is being installed and (2) be present (hopefully) if a reboot
is required.
