Forcing a Windows update from a Local Update Server

I have a situation where I have setup a local Software
Update Server (SUS) and need to be able to redirect
clients that aren't on my domain (they are on my LAN) to
the local update site as opposed to using the Internet
based Windows update site.

I also need the ability to force an update on demand, as
opposed to using a defined update schedule, ie from the
client PC, select Update Now from local SUS...

Any ideas would be appreciated.

You can do this by some registry edits. For details, see chapter "Configuring
the Automatic Updates client software" in the "Software Update Services

Current version of SUS does not support that. A hack that will do it (sort of):
