Forcing WinXP to use Standard VGA display driver

As my HIS ATI Radeon IceQ9800 Pro graphics card is in the process of dying on
me because of a memory fault, I'll shortly need to uninstall its tools etc.
software and driver before replacing the card.

I understand that it's preferable to uninstall the ATI software, and
particularly the driver, with the display driver changed to Standard Windows
VGA. This would obviously be enabled if I were in Safe Mode.

Question - is it possible to force WinXP to use the Standard VGA Mode
Drivers when starting Windows with a normal boot (i.e. before actually
uninstalling the ATI driver & software and re-booting the system) even if it
were inadvisable to do the latter uninstall in other than Safe Mode?

Any advise would be appreciated.

I would have thought that if you used add/remove dialogue to uninstall
graphics software/drivers then on reboot you would be in std vga mode.
Leastways thats how it works with nvidea vid.card drivers.
