As a pretty poor typist I have a number of useless and unrequired prompts on
some web forms.

e.g.username:-
BillSnith
VillSmith
BikkSmith

and all I want is :-
BillSmith

Is it possible to edit out my previous mistakes?

[I am reluctant to use Internet Options> Delete > Form data
as I asume it will delete the lot - including the ones I would like to
preserve.]

I believe you select the one you want to delete and then hit the delete
key.
