Hello,

i have a situatiion where an IT company made changes to the A record in the
forward lookup zone in a Windows 2003 DNS, my question is, will I be able to
restore the old DNS information (file) from a recent tape backup? I had a
look at the backup folder under c:\windows\system32\dns\backup but nothing
there.

Thanks in advance, Evans

I guess you don't know the old IP address? Because manually fixing this
is by far the easiest fix.

If the zone is AD Integrated then you would have to perform a
non-authoritative restore of AD then mark the specific dnsNode as
authoritative (System State restore).

If the zone is not AD Integrated the zone file will be held in a System
State backup unless you backup the C drive by other means.

If you have Volume Shadow Copy running on the C: drive and the zone is
not AD Integrated you might check Previous Versions for an older copy of
the zone file.

unfortunately that foward lookup zone is not AD integrated, I think the
backup has backuped the system state but is there a file I should look for
or do I have to restore the whole system state?

If you have a file level backup you need:

%SystemRoot%\System32\DNS\zonename.com.dns

You might bump into a bit of a problem because you can't restore part of
the system state, all or nothing.

Hi
Adding to Chris response, I would say to restore the zone file inf to an
alternative DNS and then create it on the prod server.

BTW: Can we know what the file refers to?

I hope that the information above helps you.
