Check if the "Automatic Updates" and the BITS service are enabled
and are possible to start and stop.

Start/Run --> services.msc

Then find "Automatic Updates" in the list, and double click on it.

Change Startup type Automatic if it is not, and press Apply.

Use the Start and Stop buttons to see if the service starts and
stops successfully.


Do the same for the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service".

Will both services start successfully? If they do, and you did a change to the
"Startup type" on any of them, try Window Update again.


If the above didn't help, try this:

Reset the security settings on the BITS and Windows Update services
and see if it helps:
