Free space on hard drive increasing

I am sure this is coincedental but figured I would ask any. Since installing
the last round of critical updates I have noticed that the amount of free
space on my main hard drive has been increasing. I now have almost 1 gig more
of free space than I did since the updates. Someone had mentioned that maybe
the new updates made the old obsolete and deleted them. Is this possible or
is it more likely that I have something else going on. I routinly empty all
temp files and history before turning off system daily. I am also running
Norton internet security 2005 along with the latest version of Spy Sweeper
which have not detected any problems. Hopefully I don't have something that
is eating files! Any thoughs or suggestions?

If you are running Windows XP, turn-off System Restore,
reboot, then turn it back on.

Thank you for your reply, not sure what you suggest will do. I have had
system restore turned off for about a year now. I'd rather use the systems
recovery feature that came with my computer. The amount of free disk space
has been increasing only since the last round of windows critical updates
