I have resently reimaged my computer and am now unable to download windows
updates. It stops on the screen "Checking for latest version of the windows
update software..." and just sits there.

I cannot say this will solve problem but worth a try, following from a
reply to self from Microsoft re:updating problems, please note this is
the work of a Microsoft Employee NOT mine.
Reg

The following is copied from a reply to myself.
............
Renaming this folder will create a fresh and new copy of it on your
system and replace all corrupt files within it. Please try the steps
given below:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box type "net stop wuauserv" ( Type exactly as written
without the quotation marks) and click OK.
4. Then again click on Start -> Run.
5. In the Run box, type %windir% (exactly has written ) and then click
OK.
6. This will open the Windows or Winnt folder or your system. Locate
the folder named SoftwareDistribution
7. Right click on this folder and then select Rename. Type the new name
as OLDSoftwareDistribution
8. Close this window.
9. Again click on Start -> Run and type "net start wuauserv" ( Type
exactly as written without the quotation marks) and then press OK.
10. Restart your system and test your issue again.

Please let me know the results of the steps provided. Should you
require further assistance, please let me know as I am more than happy
to assist you.

Kind regards,

I found a work around it is not the final solution but you can update windows
by adding following sites to IE trusted sites:
http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://download.microsoft.com
http://update.microsoft.com
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.microsoft.com

I allso turned off the Microsoft update from microsoft update site when you
click on the link on the left side Change Settings scroll down to Disable
Microsoft Update software and let me use Windows Update only.

this worked for me

I found another solution provided to me by HP Tech support:

1. Click Start, select Control Panel, and then choose Performance and
Maintenance.
2. Click the System icon to open the System properties window.
3. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
4. Click the plus (+) sign next to System Devices.
5. Right-click the ACPI related entries and select Uninstall.
6. Restart the system.

It works.
