Freezing, Crashes After KB938979 Install

Hi there. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to proceed and
troubleshoot my Vista 32-bit system after major problems following KB938979.
This morning I downloaded and installed the update (mainly in hopes of
speeding up file copying). Upon restart, Windows Explorer froze immediately
after the Windows Desktop appeared, without displaying any error specific
message.

Vista did ask whether I wanted to close the application, restart it, or wait
it out; neither waiting (for hours) nor attempting to restart Windows
Explorer worked; the application remained frozen. Closing the application
led to Vista's "searching for a solution" window, which ran for another hour
without producing any results. Eventually I Ctrl-Alt-Deleted my way to the
login/restart screen and rebooted. I retried booting up several times, each
time freezing.

Finally, I rebooted into Safe Mode, uninstalled the hotfix, and rebooted.
Now, Windows launches only to the point where I can see a mouse cursor.
There's no desktop, icons, or any responsiveness to keyboard commands.

Anyone have thoughts on how best to procede now?

Thanks,
Chris
