"Andy",

I'd love to help, but what operating system are you using?

If you could also reply back to this thread and let us know:
1. Which operating system are you running?
A. Windows XP?
B. Windows 2000?
C. Windows Server 2003?
D. Windows ME?
E. Windows 98?

2. If Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows Server 2003, which Service Pack?
You can find this:
A. Right-Click on My Computer
B. Click on Properties
C. Look at the Operating System listed on the General tab for the words:
"Service Pack"

Did this happen after an installation of Windows Update? Here are some
newsgroups that might be better able to help you:

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

I, too, would like to know the specs of your machine. What you are running
when this first started to occur. IT could be related to MEMORY issues OR
SUN JAVA!!!

The new Sun Java will freeze up your machine, and if you have had this issue
for a while, and are not properly responding to the situation, you may have
corrupted your system.

If you have the programs to redo your system, that might be the easiest way
to correct the problem. But if you are using wins xp, you might want to do a
restore back a date before this started to occur OR if there is an "image
restore" on your system, redo your system from that area. Do you still have
customer support on your computer?

If you give more details, myself or someone else may be able to walk you
through redoing your system. I think that could be your best bet at this
point in time.

Also, make sure your system is free of hooks, viruses, etc, before redoing
or restoring. A good free online check is through Panda. The link is below:

Hope this helps.

Pat -

My system came installed with Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP2 when I bought
it in April 2005. My system started freezing in Mid August when I tried
Windows Update and about 31 updates were successfully installed. I can list
them if needed from the history. My problem is actually a system freeze
where I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Del to quit the apps.

One application in particular, Scottrade streaming quotes, seemed to be
freezing the system on both IE 6.0 and Firefox 1.0.6 so I shot their support
folks an email. However, I also noticed it later while playing Yahoo! Hold
‘em Poker. That’s when I had the bright idea to find the newest runtime of
java.

Java installations and dates:
jre1.5.0_01 5/18/2005
jre1.5.0_02 5/21/2005
jre1.5.0_04 9/2/2005

Again, the symptoms first showed up after 8/18/2005 windows update. I
haven’t played with registries, but will try anything to get this resolved.
Since I have not installed too many things on my computer and can easily back
up needed data files, I am not afraid to reinstall everything from scratch as
a last resort.

Thanks in advance,
Wayne

If you have not solved your "freezing" problem yet, please try this:

Go to a site where you can download the OLD Microsoft VM Java. You can do
this by doing a google search on msjavx86 ( msjavx86.exe). Be sure and
verify that the download is free from viruses. Also, remember to disable
the SUN JAVA in "internet options" in explorer.

One link to the MS Java download is here:

http://www.download.support.safetec.net/msjavx86/

I know this solution finally solved my problem which included lockups,
freezing, eating memory problems, etc on"3" Intel Pentium 3.4 Ghz machines
with 1 GB of memory. My problem was exceptionally bad in yahoo games but saw
it on other sites using java, too.

Good luck!
